Sustainability
In Print was the focus on a seminar hosted by Kirkwood
Printing recently that drew more than 100 professional print
buyers, marketing professionals and procurement directors. Kirkwood
hosted the event to help buyers understand the changes taking
place in commercial printing that allows all printers to alter their
manufacturing and other processes to be more environmentally friendly.
Pictured, keynote event speaker Tammy Coe, left, discusses with a group
of attendees the positive environmental practices that are taking place.
Coe is a chain of custody associate with SmartWood, the agency that
certifies that printing companies are meeting the requirements of the
Forest Stewardship Council, which allows printers to use FSC certified
papers. Kirkwood Printing in Wilmington, Mass., has been certified by
both the FSC and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. Kirkwood is instituting
other measures to reduce its carbon footprint. (click photo for larger

The
end of the world as we know it? Digital presses at drupa
By Ron Ellis
The buzz about digital presses has been out for some time, but it was
different at drupa this year. Digital presses at drupa 2008 were impossible
to ignore.
Previously digital printing was thought of as something complementary
to offset printing. The new digital presses stand on their own, apart
from offset printing, with the goal of replacing offset printing. Up
until now, digital presses have often been modeled after conventional
presses, and still involved imaging cylinders and complex mechanical
assemblies related to offset imaging. That is no longer the case. (more)

expression of your annual budget which if all goes well, will get you
through the year with a little left in your pockets. But there are good
rates, and there are not so good rates. (more)

Mechanical
binding: versatile and decorative
By Frank Shear
Most of our experiences with mechanical binding stretch back to our
school days when we bought those three subject spiral notebooks so that
we only had to carry one notebook from class to class. Some of them
had pockets for teachers’ handouts. These notebooks were a great
convenience.
Mechanical binding styles such as wire-o (double loop), plastic spiral,
spiral wire, plastic (GBC) binding , velobind, and more have evolved
to greater levels of usefulness and style.
