Saltus Press celebrates a century of service
Four generations of family ownership guide Worcester, Mass. company
Saltus Press, a full-service commercial printing company in Worcester, Mass., will celebrate its 100th year of operation this year, as four generations of the Saltus family have been directly involved in the company’s day-to-day operation.

Founded in 1906 by Freeman Saltus, the company focused on the industry of newspaper publishing. During a time when working meant long, hard hours with little pay, Saltus Press set standards for better working conditions all around, providing workers with shorter hours and increased wages.

In the 1950s, Freeman handed operation of the company over to his sons. Urban took the reins first, but an illness forced his retirement two short years later. His brother, Alfred, was left in charge, followed by Alfred’s son, Loring.

It was during Loring’s leadership that Saltus Press underwent many changes that led to its current status. In addition to publishing 15 community weekly newspapers, Saltus Press supplemented its work with sheetfed printing, adding a new source of revenue to the thriving company.

Scott Saltus, great-grandson of Freeman, is now in charge of Saltus Press. It is quite different from the one Scott inherited from his father. Saltus occupies more than 63,000 square feet of workspace and employs 157 people working three shifts. With the latest printing technology and experienced, friendly customer-service personnel, Saltus Press offers customers the best printing at competitive prices.

In addition to the parent company, two outside companies have been acquired by Saltus. The first, in 1999, was Charles Overly Studios. This acquisition resulted in a new product line for Saltus-collegiate print and gift items, including: stationery, pocket folders, datebooks, handbooks, holiday items, framed prints, and many other gift items. Customers for this division include colleges and universities across the U.S.

After the Overly acquisition, Comp Digital Imaging was purchased. A digital printing company, it specializes in a wide range of high-end, high quality digital printing technology.

In its 100 years of business, Saltus Press has continued to produce a consistent source of revenue in order for it to flourish. From 1995 to 2001 the company saw a 50 percent increase in sales and has sustained profitability from year to year.

Saltus Press has maintained a long reputation for keeping customers satisfied, and is recognized as such by the Better Business Bureau. It also is in good standing with the regulations of the Fair Labor Association. Such recognitions exemplify the values that the company has held throughout its century of existence-providing the best in printing and services, while offering employees a stable, comfortable work environment.
