Kirkwood Printing among Sappi’s 2005 North American Printers of the Year
Wilmington, Mass. printer selected for annual report; will compete for international title in fall

Kirkwood Printing, a specialty multi-color sheetfed printing company in Wilmington, Mass., is one of eight printing companies in North America to be named a 2005 North American Printer of the Year by Sappi Fine Papers, the international paper company that sponsors and hosts the annual competition.

The winners were announced at a ceremony last month in Quebec City. Eight winners were selected from 47 Silver Award winners in this year’s field of more than 2,100 entries. Each of the winners were given a Gold Award to represent their excellence in printing ability. Kirkwood was selected in the annual report printing category.

The seven others selected included Hemlock Printers, Burnaby, British Columbia, books and general printing (two separate categories); Sioux Printing, Sioux Falls, S.D., brochures; The Carlson Print Group, Bloomington, Minn., calendars; Arandell Corp., Menomonee Falls, Wis., catalogs; Quebecor World, St. Cloud, Minn., magazines; and Quality Printing, Anderson, Ind., printer’s own promotion.

The Gold Award winners will represent North America in the Sappi International Printer of the Year award celebration this fall in China, competing against category winners from Central and South America, Europe, Australia, Asia and Africa. From this elite field, judges will select the nine individual recipients of the Sappi International Printer of the Year awards.

The panel of expert judges selected the Gold Award-winning entries for their use of an increasing range of technologically sophisticated, high quality printing and finishing techniques.

Kirkwood Printing’s winning piece was the printing of the annual report for Courier Corp. of North Chelmsford, Mass., — one of the country’s largest book publishing and printing companies. The report was printed on Sappi McCoy Matte paper.

Judges considered the work to be a “fabulous piece of printing with a charming design and an inspired selection of paper.”

Praising all the winners, Sappi Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Leslie said, “The importance of the quality of print should never be underestimated. With so much alternative media available, both printers and papermakers must be totally committed to creating the best products they can, so that print remains a value-added form of communication.”

Held annually since 1996, the Sappi North America Printer of the Year competition recognizes printer excellence and innovation for work printed on Sappi papers.

Silver and Bronze Awards from each region in North America are made in each of eight categories. From the Silver Award finalists, eight are chosen as the Gold Award winners. These printers then go on to represent North America in the Sappi International Printer of the Year competition, held in October.

Any work printed in the United States or Canada during 2004 was eligible for the competition. Entries are required to use one of Sappi’s paper products as their dominant stock. Printers are allowed to submit an unlimited number of entries.

The awards are judged in eight entry categories: annual reports, books, brochures, calendars, catalogs, magazines and journals, general (any printed material not in the other categories), and printer’s own promotional materials. Judges’ awards also may be presented to entries deemed worthy of special recognition.

Judging of the competition
Sappi carefully plans the judging of the Printer of the Year competition to ensure the highest possible standards and integrity. Judges are chosen from recognized print institutions and set the standards for print quality based on their technical expertise. Each entry is assigned a number to ensure anonymity, and judges with involvement in a particular category are required to abstain from judging.
