Seaboard Bindery adds Nordson PUR system
Woburn, Mass. trade finisher upgrades PUR capabilities with computerized application system

Seaboard Bindery, a bookbinding and post press services company located in Woburn, Mass., has recently upgraded its PUR (polyurethane reactive) binding capabilities with the installation of a Nordson binding system. The machine features an even distribution of glue over a defined area, greatly reducing makeready, production and wasted glue during perfect binding production.

PUR, originally developed for automobiles and aircraft, is one of the strongest adhesives available and is renowned for its durability. Able to withstand temperature extremes and bind virtually any type of material, PUR has revolutionized the bookbinding industry over the past several years.

Using the computerized glue controller on the Nordson system, Seaboard Bindery can determine the precise amount and location of PUR glue to be applied. During binding, the Nordson system uses an electric eye that senses the book and triggers the glue application device. Glue is then applied to the product. Typical Perfect binding techniques apply PUR with rollers, which provide post-press operators little control over the amount of glue applied to individual pieces.

Seaboard Bindery President Frank Shear said the Nordson System will allow Seaboard expanded perfect binding production capability. “We can now provide the benefits of PUR glue to high-end binding 100 percent of the time.”

The Nordson system will also provide design and production flexibility, said Shear. “Makeready and job runs will be faster, and imposition requirements will not be as stringent. This system provides our customers more PUR binding options than ever before.”

Seaboard Bindery is a New England trade finishing and bindery services provider that offers die cutting, folding/gluing, perfect binding, layflat and PUR adhesive binding, Wire-O, plastic coil, saddle stitching, index tabbing, collating, laminating, cutting, folding and shrink wrapping.
