Graphic Communications Day – New England takes shape
Nancy Harhut, senior VP at Hill Holliday, will deliver keynote at April 21 event

Advertising agency veteran Nancy Harhut will deliver a keynote address at Graphic Communications Day – New England, an afternoon celebration of print to be held on the third floor of the Hynes Convention Center in Copley square in downtown Boston Thursday, April 21.

Hosted by Printing Industries of New England, the purpose of Graphic Communications Day – New England is to provide information to help working professionals who purchase print and print-related services gain a deeper understanding of emerging technologies and trends that strengthen the value of print.

The event is also an opportunity to allow members of the print buying community and print service providers to meet and mingle.

Partnering associations include the American Institute of Graphic Arts – Boston, the New England Direct Marketing Association, and Bookbuilders of Boston.

Harhut is a senior vice president/executive creative director of relationship marketing at Hill Holliday Connors Cosmopulos, one of the largest advertising agencies in Boston.

She works on such accounts as Dell, LPL Financial, CVS, Capital One, The Boston Globe and Cognos. Prior to Hill Holliday, Harhut held senior creative management positions at Mullen, an advertising agency on the North Shore, and Bronner Slosberg Humphrey (now Digitas), overseeing work for AT&T, House of Seagram, American Express, GM Card and Banknorth, among others.

She is a sought-after speaker at national direct marketing conferences, a frequent contributor to industry trade publications, and the current East Coast Judging Chair of the John Caples International Awards. The New England Direct Marketing Association recently named her “Direct Marketer of the Year.”

Graphic Communications Day – New England will be a learning and celebration event attracting an audience of media buyers and print specifiers from the ranks of design firms, advertising agencies and corporate graphic departments.

The event will run from 1 to 8:30 p.m. Three 90-minute seminars will run from 1 to 2:30 p.m., and three separate 90-minute seminars will run from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

Seminar topics include proofing, large format and specialty printing, digital photography, and mailing and distribution. Practical topics such as how to evaluate cost beyond the invoice, introduction to the benefits of digital printing, and understanding the production time line, will also be among the seminar topics.

An exhibit area will open at 2:30 — the break period between the first and second set of seminars.

The exhibit area will consist of tabletop displays by vendors offering technological innovations in print and related services, paper suppliers, printers, specialty finishing firms and more. It will be a compendium of services that make up the complete value chain in the evolving graphic arts industry.

“As New England’s largest trade association to serve companies in the graphic arts industries who make their living providing printing and a growing range of related services, it is critical that we keep buyers informed of the changes that continually transform our industry,” said Jim Tepper, president of PINE.

“We remain quite proud of the ink on paper printing that our members do, but our industry is fast becoming much more than just ink on paper. Our members can serve buyers from concept to delivery,” Tepper said. “It’s important that we not only tell buyers that, but also show them as well. That is the basis for Graphic Communications Day – New England, an event we hope to host annually. Plus it’s nice to get together with our friends in the buying community.”
