Golf tournament planned in honor of 9-11 victim
Odyssey Press co-owner Doug Stone remembered
For the third year in a row, employees at Odyssey Press in Gonic, N.H., are hosting a golf tournament in honor of their friend and colleague Douglas J. Stone.

Stone was co-owner of Odyssey Press when he died aboard American Airlines Flight 11 that was hijacked by terrorists and flown into the World Trade Center’s north tower in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001.

“This is our way of honoring Doug,” said Laurie Ross, an Odyssey employee who has helped organize the Doug Stone Classic for each of the last three years. “This is a day when many of us want to be together with friends and family to remember Doug.”

The Doug Stone Classic will be held Saturday, Sept. 11 at The Links at Outlook in South Berwick, Maine.

The $100 per person cost covers greens fees, a golf cart, a bucket of range balls, food, beverages and prizes. The event can accommodate 120 golfers. Sponsorship opportunities are available for $250.

Owner Tad Parker said the Douglas J. Stone Scholarship has an endowment of $40,000 and has generated income so far to allow for the granting of one scholarship to a graduating senior from Dover High School in nearby Dover, N.H., Stone’s alma mater.

“The criteria for the scholarship recipient is that the graduating senior has to exhibit a strong work ethic, have a good sense of humor and have an interest in pursuing work in the graphic arts,” Parker said. “Those were characteristics that were important to Doug.”

The scholarship fund is administered by the Greater Piscataqua Community Foundation, which serves as the local chapter of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation. Parker said a $500 scholarship was awarded in 2002, mostly from employee contributions, and a $1,000 scholarship was awarded to a graduating senior in 2003 and 2004.

“Rain or shine, it’s going to be a fun day,” Parker said. “This is an event that is important to those of us who were Doug’s friends.”
