Saltus Press acquires Comp Digital Imaging
Saltus Press, a sheetfed and non-heatset web printing company in Worcester, MA, has acquired Comp Digital Imaging, a full-service graphic arts provider that opened in 1979 as a prepress trade shop in the owner’s basement. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Saltus Press is a well-known family-owned commercial printing company founded in 1906. It employs approximately 150 people.

Comp Digital Imaging, located adjacent to Worcester in Millbury, MA, is a full-service digital plant, producing multi-color printing and graphics. In 1998, Comp invested in digital scanning and large format film output devices, servicing area printers and advertising agencies. In addition, electronic photo retouching, digital color proofing and building electronic files all became part of Comp’s extended services, helping it to become a front-runner in digital printing.

Comp Digital Imaging invested in a Heidelberg direct imaging press during its aggressive expansion. This breakthrough in digital printing technology helped make short-run, high-quality full-color work faster and more affordable than ever before. Comp’s success in the digital and four-color market soon became evident. In 2000 they installed a 20 by 28-inch six-color Heidelberg Speedmaster with coating capabilities.

No information was available on the impact the acquisition may have on jobs at either company.

The Comp purchase is the second major acquisition for Saltus Press over the past three years.

In September 2000 Saltus purchased Overly Publishing, a leading producer of custom handbooks, planners, gift and stationery needs in the college market. It operates as a division of Saltus Press.
