Monitor-based
proofing: Technology is moving forward and it is working
By Ron Ellis
During the past several years many monitor-based proofing systems have
been introduced. Though the rate of adoption by members of the printing
industry has been low, many printers express interest in the technology.
Past monitor-based proofing results have been less accurate than the
results obtained by inkjet and traditional proofs. Fortunately, times
have changed and the equipment and software have changed. Most of the
new products have solved the ease of use issues, and the results are
much improved. With the proper equipment and software, the accuracy
rate can be as high as 90 percent.

Tech Alert 2005 Conference: Application shortcuts on key technologies
By C. Clint Bolte
Nearly 200 print technology aficionados gathered at the Pittsburgh Airport
Hyatt Regency Hotel last month to participate in the 13th annual Tech
Alert Conference hosted by Printing Industries of America/Graphic Arts
Technical Foundation (PIA/GATF). Each year the results of hundreds of
hours testing the latest print applications by PIA/GATF are shared with
attendees. This year’s tests included the impact of various PDF
workflows on color management efforts, the adverse impact of coatings
on trying to match digital proofs to press, how to prevent blanket piling
when stochastic printing, and how to minimize the quality degradation
on digitally printed products subjected to the high speed sorting equipment
used by the U.S. Postal Service. |
