MassEnvelopePlus CEO raises funds for Howard Dean presidential campaign
Steve Grossman takes senior role in former Vermont governor's bid for Democratic nomination

Steven Grossman, chief executive officer of MassEnvelopePlus in Somerville, MA who failed in his bid to be the Democratic gubernatorial candidate for governor in Massachusetts last year, is back in politics.

Grossman has taken a leadership role in raising money for Howard Dean, the former governor of Vermont who has announced his candidacy for the Democratic Party nomination for president in 2004.

Dean was the first of several Democrats to announce his intentions to seek the Democratic nomination and the chance to challenge President George Bush in the next presidential campaign. Several other nationally known Democrats — including Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts and Sen. Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut — have announced their candidacies for the Democratic nomination as well.

Grossman said he organized fund raising events for Dean in the Boston area in November and December and plans several more in the weeks to come.
“I told Howard that I’ll do whatever I can to help him get elected to the office of the president of the United States,” Grossman said. “I’ve known Howard since 1991 when I was chairman of the Massachusetts Democratic Party. I’ve always found him to be a man of great moral stature.

“I support Howard Dean because I believe he can bring that moral stature to the office of the president that it needs. I believe political courage is a very rare commodity in American politics these days and Howard Dean has displayed political courage throughout his career as governor,” Grossman said.

Although he has no official title in the campaign, Grossman said Dean campaign workers and supporters view his role as that of a senior advisor to the former governor.

Grossman envisions his role growing as campaign activity increases throughout the year, but he has no intention of leaving the family-owned full-service commercial printing company in Somerville started by his great grandfather 93 years ago.

“My first responsibilities are to my family and my business. I want to make sure our business continues to grow, develop and flourish,” he said. “We just started a promotional products division and we see great business opportunities there. We just hired two new people; so even in these challenging economic times, there are opportunities for our company that we want to maximize.

“I hope to be able to help Howard develop positions on issues that are connected and resonate in the business community. As a CEO for 20 years, I want to make sure Howard Dean’s programs help strengthen the economy of the entire business community because without a healthy business community we can’t have a healthy America.”
