The printing industry in New England
Printing is America’s third largest manufacturing industry — employing more than 1 million people in 42,976 establishments, and selling nearly $161 billion of products in 2005. The industry is dominated by small- and medium-sized businesses, most employing fewer than 20 employees.

Printing Industries of America’s (PIA) is the premier source for information about the state of the printing industry, providing printers, suppliers, consultants, and others with in-depth information. One way of doing so is through their annual Print Market Atlas. The numbers, compiled through a statistical formula created by PIA’s Economics Department using four key data sources, represents the most comprehensive estimates about the size of the nation’s printing industry.
