is America’s third largest manufacturing industry — employing
more than 1 million people in 38,819 establishments, and selling
$174 billion of products in 2007. The industry is dominated by small-
and medium-sized businesses, most employing fewer than 20 employees. Printing Industries of America (PIA) is the premier source for information about the state of the printing industry, providing printers, suppliers, consultants, and others with in-depth information. One way of doing so is through their annual Print Market Atlas. The numbers, compiled through a statistical formula created by PIA’s Economics Department using four key data sources, represents the most comprehensive estimates about the size of the nation’s printing industry.
