OSHA 10-Hour General Industry Outreach Training
for the Printing Industry

PINE’s Environmental Health & Safety Department is offering a 10-hour general industry outreach training program designed to help you and your employees work safer, lower your workers’ compensation and increase your compliance with OSHA regulations.

The training is geared specifically toward the hazards associated with the printing and graphic communications industry including commercial printers, finishing shops, binderies and mail, fulfillment and distribution centers. Completion of this course will show a “good-faith” effort to OSHA toward making your plant safer. This “good-faith” will be of value if your facility is ever inspected by OSHA.

Course Instructor
The course is led by Mark Flannery, director of environmental affairs at PINE. Mark is an authorized outreach trainer through OSHA and has more than 10 years of experience assisting printing companies with their safety issues. Mark visits approximately 80 to 100 printing companies throughout New England annually. Mark has a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering and is a registered Engineer-in-Training.

Course Syllabus
Below are the recommended topics for the printing industry:

Day One Topics
  • Introduction to OSHA
  • Walking and Working Surfaces
  • Means of Egress and Fire Protection
  • Electrical Safety
  • Flammable and Combustible Liquids
Day Two Topics
  • Hazard Communication
  • Personal Protective Equipment
  • Machine Guarding
  • Lockout/Tagout
  • Ergonomics
For brief topic descriptions click here.

Each topic is approximately one hour. Day One covers mandatory safety topics set by OSHA guidelines for the course. Day Two covers topics that OSHA recommends be covered for printing and graphic communications firms. Two of the topics listed for Day Two may be substituted with any of the following topics:

  • Hearing Conservation
  • Powered Industrial Trucks (forklifts and powered jacks)
  • Confined Spaces
  • Introduction to Industrial Hygiene/Bloodborne Pathogens
  • Safety and Health Programs
  • OSHA Recordkeeping

If your facility has high noise levels and is subject to the OSHA Hearing Conservation Standard (noise levels above 85 decibels), it is recommended to include this topic with Personal Protective Equipment and cover one half-hour for each topic.

If more than 75 percent of the attendees use forklifts or powered hand jacks, it is recommended to substitute this topic for either Machine Guarding or Ergonomics. If less than 75 percent of attendees use forklifts or powered hand jacks, this topic is not recommended to be included with the training.

Course Materials, Handouts and Completion Cards
Each student will receive a course booklet with detailed information about each topic discussed. One CD ROM with the instructor’s presentation files (most in PowerPoint) and with sample OSHA programs will also be included.

Each student that successfully completes the course will receive a Course Completion Card from OSHA. These cards will be signed by the instructor and include the date the course was completed.

Recommended Students
The student participation level will be limited to 15 per course. This size course has been shown to be the optimal size to maximize the student’s retention of information. Production workers, supervisors, safety committee members, Human Resources staff, managers and owners are the target audience for this course.

Course Fee
The course fee is $1,500. This includes all materials described above. If the course is taught in a format other than two 5-hour sessions, a $250 per additional day is required to account for instructor travel and set-up time requirements. One half of the course fee is due prior to Day One with the balance due the day the course is completed.
